Carl E. Cummings Distinguished Service Award
Since 1972, the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics has honored annually an outstanding mathematics educator with a “Distinguished Service Award.” It is bestowed upon someone who has made significant and widespread contributions to mathematics education in West Virginia.
Carl Cummings was presented with a captain’s chair as the first Distinguished Service Award by the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1972. Hence, the award is often called “The Chair.”
The WVCTM membership is invited to nominate a person they believe has contributed widely to mathematics education in West Virginia. Please send an email explaining your reasons for nominating this eductor to Jerry Pomeroy (jwpomero@gmail.com) by January 10, 2026 if you wish to nominate someone.
Walter E. Regula Teacher-in-Training Grant
WVCTM is proud to offer the annual Teacher-in-Training Grant, a $750 award that supports an outstanding West Virginia college student preparing to become a mathematics teacher. Created in memory of Dr. Walter E. Regula, this grant honors future educators who show great promise and a commitment to teaching in our state. The selected recipient will be honored at the WVCTM Conference Banquet at Stonewall Resort and invited to attend the full 2026 conference. Applications are due January 20, 2026.
